UA Department of Spanish and Portuguese

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona is dedicated to the study of the Spanish and Portuguese languages, as well as the diverse cultures, literatures, histories, and societies of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs that develop language proficiency, cultural competency, critical thinking, and research skills. Through coursework, study abroad opportunities, community engagement, and scholarly research, students gain a deeper understanding of the linguistic and cultural traditions of Latin America, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and Hispanic communities in the United States.
